Problem

The client initially came looking for a new logo and a light storefront refresh prior to the summer season. As we discussed the business, its customers, and day-to-day insights, it became clear that the visual identity wasn't the core issue—it was simply one piece of a much larger opportunity.

I recommended expanding the scope because I didn't believe a new storefront logo alone would solve the business challenges. I'm intentional about the work I take on and want to help build stronger businesses—not deliver solutions I don't believe will make a meaningful difference.

Following a change in ownership, the café's branding had become fragmented across its storefront and digital presence, making it difficult to communicate a clear brand story. At the same time, increased competition in the neighborhood reinforced the need to better articulate what made Cocoa + Co. unique. One of the café's defining offerings—its specialty drinking chocolate—was central to the owner's vision, yet it wasn't being communicated clearly to customers.

The challenge became creating a brand strategy that clarified the café's identity, celebrated its unique offerings, and attracted new guests while preserving the warmth and familiarity that existing customers already loved.

Strategy

Leveraging my background in interior architecture, I expanded the project to include storefront enhancements, signage and permitting consultation for Chicago's historic Old Town district, an interior refresh, and strategic space planning to improve customer flow, maximize seating, and create a warmer, more intentional guest experience.

  • Storefront visibility and curb appeal

  • Product positioning and brand storytelling

  • Cohesive brand identity system

  • Environmental graphics and packaging

  • Social media and digital touchpoints

  • Customer experience strategy

  • Signage design and permitting

  • Space planning and customer flow

  • Budget friendly interior refresh recommendations

Solution

The proposed concept gave Cocoa + Co. a clearer story to tell. Rather than relying on customers to discover what made the café unique, the brand, storefront, and interior worked together to introduce visitors to the world of drinking chocolate while reinforcing the warm, neighborhood character that existing customers already loved.

Light interior updates—including fresh paint, product positioning and brand storytelling through educational graphics introducing customers to the world of drinking chocolate, and a feature wall reading "Craft Coffee Meets the World of Chocolate"—helped transform the interior into an extension of the brand while educating customers on what made Cocoa + Co. unique.

Outcome

What began as a storefront logo request evolved into a comprehensive hospitality strategy that addressed the business as a whole. I believe the strongest brands are built through hundreds of intentional decisions that shape how people discover, navigate, remember, and return to a place.By looking beyond the visual identity, the proposal connected branding, the built environment, and the customer experience into a cohesive vision designed to create lasting value.
